Probably as simple as:
./apachectl start

It does work!

What I was doing was actually going to the /usr/local/apache2/bin folder and
typing
apachectl start

That wasn't working.
(Like I said, I'm not a very experienced user.)

If you did the default install, it installed apachectl to
/usr/local/apache2/bin.  Try running:

/usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl start

and see if it works.
