I see. I don't run apache2 although I do know the remote errordocument
line does work on 1.3.x ok:

ErrorDocument 401 http://other.site/errorhandler

try putting all the 401 error html in a file on your other site
then perhaps and reference it as suggested in my last post?

file 401.html: (*on remote server*)
-start-
<html>
<head>
<title>Error logging in</title>
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
window.location="http://xxxxxxx.xxx.com:82/error.html";
</script>
</head>
<body>
<h1> Sorry, no go!!!!
</h1>
</body>
</html>"
-end-

*in local server configuration (.htaccess or httpd.conf)*:
<Directory "/opt/hpws/apache/htdocs">
	AuthType Basic
	AuthName "RoboTask Password Required"
	AuthUserFile /opt/hpws/apache/passwd/passwords
	AuthGroupFile /opt/hpws/apache/conf/groups
	require group 272users
	ErrorDocument 401 http://remote.server/401.htm
</Directory>
