What I need to do is opposite:

<Client Browser>     -->HTTPS-->    <Proxy> -HTTP-> <Remote HTTP Server>
             (for user authentication)

I posted the question before, but I received no answer. Thus I am forced
to look at other solutions. One product can easily solve the problem:

   EZProxy  at http://www.usefulutilities.com

EZProxy is not open source, but it is inexpensive and flexible. It is
widely used at university libraries. I just hope Apache-Proxy group can
enhance mod_proxy to be more versatile.
