Thanks Nikolaus! I'll try it out. Just got back from traveling, so I'll work
on it today.

Brian,
some config snippets that may help you out.
I did this using apache 2.0.47 / tomcat 4.1.27 - it might also work with
apache 2.0.45 and tomcat 4.1.18.

try this one as apache config snippet:
------------ snip -----------
<VirtualHost *>
    ServerAdmin brian@innovtech.com
    DocumentRoot "c:/tomcat/webapps/nnmall2"
    ServerName www.nnmall2.com
    ServerAlias nnmall2.com  *.nnmall2.com
    DirectoryIndex main.jsp

   AddHandler jakarta-jk2 .jsp

   # jk2 status page (http://localhost/jkstatus/*)
    <LocationMatch "/jkstatus">
      AllowOverride None
      Order deny,allow
      Allow from localhost
    </LocationMatch>

    <LocationMatch "/*.jsp">
        JkUriSet worker ajp13:localhost:8009
    </LocationMatch>
    <LocationMatch "/*.do">
        JkUriSet worker ajp13:localhost:8009
    </LocationMatch>
    <LocationMatch "/servlet/*">
        JkUriSet worker ajp13:localhost:8009
    </LocationMatch>

   # leave users out from those webapp dirs
    <DirectoryMatch "/WEB-INF">
      AllowOverride None
      Deny from all
    </DirectoryMatch>
    <DirectoryMatch "/META-INF">
      AllowOverride None
      Deny from all
    </DirectoryMatch>
</VirtualHost>
------------ snap -----------

Use this one as "workers2.properties" within apaches sysconfig dir:
------------ snip -----------

# -----------------------------------------------
# Some "defaults" ...
# -----------------------------------------------
[logger.apache2]
level=INFO

[logger]
level=INFO

[config:]
debug=INFO
debugEnv=INFO

[shm:]
info=Scoreboard.
file=${serverRoot}/run/jk2.shm
size=1000000
debug=ERROR
disabled=0

[uriMap:]
info=Maps the requests.
debug=INFO

[workerEnv:]
info=Global server options
timing=1
debug=INFO

[lb:lb]
info=Default load balancer.
debug=DEBUG

[status:]
info=Status worker, displays runtime informations

[uri:/jkstatus/*]
group=status:

# -----------------------------------------------
# nnmall application
# -----------------------------------------------

# load balancer
[lb:mallprod]
info=production load balancer.
debug=INFO

# instance connection channel
[channel.socket:mallprodchannel]
info=Ajp13 forwarding over socket
debug=INFO
group=mallprod
host=localhost
port=8009
disabled=0

# protocol handler
[ajp13:mallprodchannel]
name=ajp13-prod
lb_factor=10
debug=INFO
------------ snap -----------

Use an empty "jk2.properties" file within CATALINA_BASE/conf dir
(If no cloned catalina configuration is in use, take CATALINA_HOME/conf).

Use the snippet given below for the ajp13 connector within server.xml.
Vary processor count, debug to suitable values for Your site.
------------ snip -----------
    <Connector className="org.apache.coyote.tomcat4.CoyoteConnector"
               address="localhost"
               port="8009"
               redirectPort="8443"
               minProcessors="5"
               maxProcessors="300"
               enableLookups="false"
               acceptCount="10"
               debug="5"
               connectionTimeout="0"
               useURIValidationHack="false"

protocolHandlerClassName="org.apache.jk.server.JkCoyoteHandler"/>
------------ snap -----------
