Have you tried writing a line for ³DirectoryIndex² in the virtual host line
in your httpd.conf file such as:

<VirtualHost xx.xx.xx.xx>
ServerName yourdomain.com
Serveralias www.yourdomain.com
DirectoryIndex index.php
DocumentRoot /home/www/yourdomain.com
TransferLog logs/yourdomain.com-transfer
ErrorLog logs/yourdomain.com-error
</Virtualhost>

This should force any requests coming to this virtual domain to look only
for index.php
