There's recently been a lengthy discussion of the topic on the mailing list.
Try looking in the mailing list archives.  It all depends on the level of
complexity you require.  From the most basic using only Apache (using
Auth-Type Basic or Digest, .htaccess, and .htpasswd) to using external
scripts and cookies and timeouts to impose a session on top of the stateless
HTTP (HTTPS).
