Hmmmm .. Well I tried the Require user <username> without success. Apache
2.0.47 runs but it no longer challenges me.

I'm not sure whether I could be of any help but i had the same problem with 
setting up digest auth on my server.. Firstly,
your directive looks fine to me except the 'Require <user>' line - i'd try 
Require user <username>
instead of 
Require valid-user.

Secondly, did you use htdigest to create the password hash like that:
htdigest <filename> <realm> <username>
