Subject [users@httpd] two graceful restarts too close to each other cause of failure?
Date Wed, 30 Jul 2003 04:51:34 GMT
We received a warning page from a server at 00:05:00 that httpd and httpsd were
down. checking server logs after the failure to gracefully restart;

<log>
[Wed Jul 30 00:01:09 2003] [notice] SIGUSR1 received. Doing graceful restart
[Wed Jul 30 00:01:10 2003] [error] Cannot remove module mod_frontpage.c: not
found in module list
Processing config directory: /www/.httpd.conf/ConfigLinks/

...loads all the little config files...

[Wed Jul 30 00:01:12 2003] [notice] Apache/1.3.19 (Unix) FrontPage/5.0.2.2510
mod_ssl/2.8.2 OpenSSL/0.9.6 PHP/4.0.4pl1 configured -- resuming normal
operations
[Wed Jul 30 00:01:12 2003] [notice] suEXEC mechanism enabled (wrapper:
/usr/local/sbin/suexec)
[Wed Jul 30 00:03:06 2003] [notice] SIGUSR1 received. Doing graceful restart

httpd: module "mod_frontpage.c" could not be loaded, because the dynamic
module limit was reached. Please increase DYNAMIC_MODULE_LIMIT and recompile.

httpd in free(): warning: chunk is already free.
...this last one repeated a couple dozen times...
</log>

see a bunch of the free() messages immediately following, but I had performed
another stop/start at 00:33 and since these are not timestamped (and no other
errors in the log to guage time by) I can't assume they are not related to the
stopping of the server.

We are in the middle of migrating our log rotation and handling methods, two
seperate restarts(as graceful as they may be) is not the norm. However,
currently we have two programs that rotate different sets of log files. one runs
at 00:01 the other at 00:03 daily. I am wondering if these two are butting up
against each other (one graceful not completing beforethe other is called). Can
anyone verify that?

The other usual suspect is frontpage extensions... this is the only unix box
that we run that has them, and perhaps coincidence that this box generates the
most problems.

Would appreciate any insight for future reference to potential causes for the
graceful restart failure.

Dave
