I'm sure of 2.  As for 1, could this configuration have something to do 
with the script not running:

  AuthName "thinkering.com"
  AuthUserFile /home/nidelven/backmeup/webdavpwds
  AuthType Basic
  AllowOverride None
  DAV On
  Options Indexes
  Order allow,deny
