I'd actually have expected both those examples to work - perhaps you
dropped the trailing slash when you tried the first example?

In any case, out of the box you will have a problem with server-generated
redirects.  This can be fixed using the ProxyPassReverse directive, with
the same arguments as ProxyPass.
