Yes, it is on Linux.  I created a www user.  If I set it back to root that
it will not start because it says it is a huge security hole which I
understand.  Is there a way around this other than port forwarding?

Under what userid are you trying to start apache.  If Port/Listen is set
to "80" (the default) then you need to be root.
