Subject RE: [users@httpd] enabling ssl on multiple virtual hosts
Date Thu, 10 Apr 2003 20:13:29 GMT
Ok then how do I set up a separate key pair for each virtualhost? I
used the following link to set up an initial certificate:
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-7.3-Manual/custom-guide/s1-
installation-generatingkey.html

By changing the "common name (your name or server's hostname)" field
will that create a unique certificate?

Yes, because the ssl cert is keyed to the url domain. For instance your
key may be www.jalene.com, which cannot be used for www.lon.com, the
certificate would complain that the domain is incorrect.

Ok I think I understand that addition to the virtualhost
command. For each virtual host do I need to set up a separate key pair?

	Jalene,

To enable multiple hosts with SSL you'll need to do IP virtual
hosting, not name. The reason is that in Name virtual hosting the
server needs to read the header to return the proper content, but it
can't until the SSL completes decrypting the header, but which does SSL
profile it use...on and on.

	Chicken and egg problem.

With IP virtual hosting any request coming in on X.X.X.X:443
will be directed to the proper SSL cert.

That's how I understand it anyway.

	I have apache 1.3.27 running on a Redhat 7.3 server. I have
multiple
virtual hosts and I want to enable ssl on each of the hosts. is
it
possible to configure each of the virtual hosts with ssl? If so
how? I
will be using the self generated certificates.

	Thanks!
	Jalene
