=

= RPM are in entirely the wrong place to be useful.

I've done a half dozen apache installs in the past year and always get
/var/www/html/manual/. Which version did you install?

=
= that RPM installs a pile of HTML files under the directory
= /var/www/manual, and many of those HTML files end with the suffix
= ".html.en". normally, that wouldn't be a problem since httpd
= deals with those files via content negotiation, right?
=
= that means you can't just view those online docs via a
= browser -- you're forced to be running the apache server and
= browse to localhost.

In your browser enter <file:///var/www/manual/> or, better, at the
command prompt do "mv /var/www/manual /var/www/html".

=
= however (and here's the problem), the directory /var/www/manual
= is not beneath the default DocumentRoot, so you can't load those
= files through the server.
=
= is this really a bit of a design flaw, or am i missing something
= obvious here?

You're right-- something goofy happened somewhere. But it's still
fixable (see above).

ken
