The solution to this is to compile from source, do not use the binary. Once
I downloaded and compiled on my machine, it all worked fine.

Subject: [users@httpd] Can't start Apache 1.3.26 on Solaris 5.8 -- "syntax
error at line 1"

I can't start apache 1.3.26 on Solaris 5.8. I get the following error:

# ./apachectl start
/usr/apache/bin/httpd: syntax error at line 1: `(' unexpected
./apachectl start: httpd could not be started

My LD_LIBRARY_PATH is below:

# echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH
/usr/lib:/lib:/usr/local/lib:/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7/lib

This is a binary dist: apache_1.3.26-i86pc-sun-solaris2.280.tar.gz

What is going on????
