Subject [users@httpd] http get vars problem!

the problem is: i made this simple script in php,
<? print "the var is: $test2"; ?>
then i use this as the url
http://mysite/test.php?test2=2
the result is i was expecting would be something like 

the var is:2

the result i get is 

the var is:

 what do i have to add to httpd.conf??
the server is apache 1.3.27_1 php_mod is intalled and
ssl_mod.
