This is the section from the httpd.conf:

Alias  /scarleton "/export/home/carleton/scarleton"

    AuthType basic
    AuthUserFile /data01/www/passwd/users

    Satisfy any

Oh, I do NOT have an .htaccess file in /export/home/carleton/scarleton, 
is that a problem?
