Subject RE: [users@httpd] .htaccess + htpasswd NOT working
Date Thu, 27 Feb 2003 01:56:52 GMT

Astrid,

It's been over a year since I messed with htpasswd, so I'm probably not
clear on all the details. And you've got the general idea pretty good.
Just for a test, copy your .htpasswd file into ~strudel and try to get
to <http://www.sigel.co.nz/~strudel/>.

= Okay ... obviously I don't understand the purpose of .htpasswd. I
= thought that httpd.conf was meant to pop up a dialog box, take the
= username and password and check them against the user and passwords
= added into the .htpasswd file and if everything matched up then let
= that user have access to the files on the other side of that dialog

= Confused,

= Unless I read it too fast, in an earlier post you showed a couple
= entries from your logs, both of which said "user not found". One error
= line referred to "test", the other to "strudel". The command you ran
= for me checked for the existence of both those users. You have one, but
= not the other. Yet, the error msg shows that neither is found. I'm
= guessing that something was messed up when you ran htpasswd.
