You may want to look at:
	--> "UnixSystem Administration Handbook"

It is very helpful in this area.

I personally usually do

	ls -l /
	ls -l /var
	ls -l /var/www
	ls -l /var/www/foo

if it is not too 'deep' a stack.

And check that easy level is world readable (or group -and that the server
run-time-uid belongs to the group):

	id nobody

and that directories are -also- executable (x set),

	$ grep User httpd.conf
	User www
	$ grep Group httpd.con
	Group www

Ok - so now we know that group and user are both called www. Check out
what other groups 'www' belongs too.

	$ id www
	uid=70(www) gid=70(www) groups=70(www)

No other groups.

	# ls -la / | head
	total 17649
	drwxrwxr-t   43 root   admin       1462 Feb 26 12:49 .

So / is fine; rx for world.

	# cd /var
	# ls -la | head
	total 16
	drwxr-xr-x   21 root  wheel     714 Feb 26 23:05 .

Fine too - rx for world

	# cd www-docs
	# ls -la | head
	drwxr-x---   21 root  wheel     714 Feb 26 23:05 .

Ok - problem - not accessible to the user www

	# chown www www-docs
	# chgrp www www-docs

(or alternatively do

	# chmod g+rx

to make it world read/xssible.

... etc.
