Does apache just hang, or die early? I had the same problem and
couldn't 
figure out what it was, when i'd run apache, the server would come
up, 
and if you tried to connect to it, it would make the connection and
all, 
but wouldn't get any data (like if you telneted in to 80, you could 
enter what ever you wanted and it wouldnt do a thing). I tried 
recompling in a few different ways, and with different mods and mpm's
installed and nothing worked
