(That's not very clear... I'm just guessing below on the actual
structure.)

And what URL are you using?  If you are accessing
http://yourhost.example.com/u/khj
then you need to use
<Directory /usr/local/etc/httpd/htdocs/u/khj>

To make this clear, I suggest getting rid of the symlink and using an
Apache Alias directive.  This eliminates much confusion.
