Jurgen,

No, I'm going to the /www/bin directory and typing ./apachectl.  I'm
wondering if there's a possiblity I either needed to use another technique
to remove it other than rm -r apache2 or something I needed to add into my
configure statement other than --prefix=/www?

is there a chance you are starting your old server instead of the new one?
