AuthType Digest
would even be (much) better and really secure.

The truly paranoid would also use SSL.

Kind Regards,

Try this:

In httpd.conf:

<Location /server-status>
    SetHandler server-status
    Order deny,allow
    Deny from all
    Allow from localhost
    Allow from <IP-OF-CLIENT1>
    Allow from <IP-OF-CLIENT2>
    AuthUserFile /[full system path to your .htpasswd file]/.htpasswd
    AuthName "[Prompt to be displayed in the pop up window]"
    AuthType Basic
    Require valid-user
</Location>

This provides two levels, requests can only come from certain IP's and they
also have to pass the basic authorization. The .htpasswd file does not need
to be in the web folders but does need to be readable by the apacher user.

Create the .htpasswd file with the htpasswd command from the /apache/bin/
directory.\

HTH

Would anyone please tell me how to provide secure, authenticated means to
display the status of Apache server ?

Thanks

Michael
