2.0.43 is the latest released Apache 2.0 server.

.tar is short for tape archive
.Z is a compressed file.
.gz is a compressed file that uses gunzip to extract it. Gzip is used
to compress it.

You can gunzip and untar in one step but it has been awhile since I have
done this. Someone in the DISA can help you with this.

All three are used on *Nix machines. The .zip is for a Windows based
machine.

Subject: [users@httpd] First time posting...

To anyone,

I have a simple question for someone that knows the answer. I want to
download the lastest and greatest stable release of the Apache web
server to be used in a production environment. I don't want the latest
beta or next soon-to-be release version. Apache.org says Apache 2.0.43
is the best available version. Is Apache 2.0.43 the lastest and greatest
production release version or latest new version not officially released
yet?

What is the difference in the names apache versus httpd as in
apache_1.3.27.tar.gz and httpd-2.0.43.tar.Z? Are these both the same
thing with a different name? (I know they are diiferent versions). If
they are both the same, why the different naming convention?

Please advise.

Thank you.
Jim
