I used mod_reqwrite for this,

here is the section of my httpd.conf...\

<VirtualHost you.ip.addr>
    ServerAdmin you@here
    ServerName your.server.name
   Redirect / https://your.server.name/
</VirtualHost>

This worked for me, just be sure you also have a virtual host set up for the 
secure request...
