I'm in the middle of implementing the same thing.  What I did was, add a
redirect statement in the http version's virtualhost.  It would look
something like this:

<VirtualHost 1.2.3.4:80>
    ServerName foo.bar.com
    DocumentRoot /location/of/doc/root
    Redirect /secured/area/ https://foo.bar.com/secured/area/
</VirtualHost>

That works great for me.
