Did you ever get an answer to this? I am having the same exact problem. I
get the same errors but I can't figure out why.

thanks!

This is the error I get from my java console on IE 6

Error loading class: SimpleChatApplet
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError
java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: SimpleChatApplet
     at com/ms/vm/loader/URLClassLoader.loadClass
     at com/ms/vm/loader/URLClassLoader.loadClass

     at java/lang/Thread.run

I also tried application/x-java-vm in httpd.conf.
The browser status bar still says that the applet class is not found.
