Exactly. In fact, for security reasons you may want to disable incoming ICMP echo requests. Remember, deny everything and only allow those services you are specifically using. Since you care that the webserver is up, there's no need to ping. If you insist on using bash instead of perl, could you have the system run a wget command for the index page and then parse the result?
