Subject RE: [users@httpd] Log files show alien invasion
Date Mon, 21 Oct 2002 07:50:46 GMT
Hi,

our server is down...
As Dixiesys (our hosts) says: BAZILLION httpd processes running on it!

Would a recompile help?? If so, I'll gladly try it at least... we're hitting
the MaxClients as well from time to time.

There was nothing changed, the guy didn't had the time to make what he
wanted to do, and Dixie didn't changed a thing neither.

So I guess I'll need the recompile:
- Linux Red Hat
- we use php, mysql, ssh
- dso? static?
- /etc/init.d/httpd
(if that's it... that's what I type before starting/stopping the server)
- /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
- I can't connect to the server now anyways :(

Thanks,

Koen

Is your server actually working? Does your site respond to requests? (I
think not).

Your binary is corrupted and broken. You have to check if you have a
working apache binary somewhere (on backup?), copy it into your apache
bin directory and restart it. Otherwise, if you didn't keep a backup,
you have to recompile apache to get a working binary.

Who "...compiled some memory sharing into it"? Do you know exactly what
he did? Does he? Does anyone?

If you need to run a quick recompile, I can send you some instructions:
- What OS are you using?
- What additional features do you need (e.g. mod_ssl, php, mysql etc)?
- Do you want a DSO or static compile?
- What is the full path to your apache binary (httpd)?
- What is the full path to your apache config (httpd.conf)?
- What is the full path to your apache libexec directory (e.g.
/usr/local/apache/libexec)?

Hi,

I read that about the segmentation too... but I have no clue what is
meant
with it.

Well I think I heard that my friend compiled some memory sharing into
it...
he needed gcc for it and such... I don't know have to ask him :s

I don't think we recompiled Apache, it's possible though our host did
it.

Thanks,

Koen

A segmentation fault occurs when a program attempts to write to an area
of memory which has not been allocated to it...

Since apache is a well-written program, it is not due to sloppy code but
rather that something has changed with respect to libraries or
something. For example, if you compile a new version of apache and then
move modules from that new version into the libexec directory of your
running apache, you will get this type of problem.

Did you do anything like that?

What on earth is going on??? Is it The Matrix???
I start the server and it launches itself full segmentation errors???
wutever that may be :s
Any way to stop that?? Does it has to do with memory config of MySQL???

And those 408 errors... I wonder if they're related to seg(11) errors...
I'm
clueless.
Any light on this matter will help, even the tiniest match :(

Thanks,

Koen

Met vriendelijke groet,

Koen Vingerhoets
