Thanks very much for the reply. I tried your suggestion, "Options Indexes
FollowSymlinks", restarted httpd and got the following results when trying
to access name.com/docs:

the URL changed from name.com/ to name.com:8080/docs/ and the page displayed
said: You don't have permission to access /docs/ on this server

?????
