Subject RE: [users@httpd] maximum no.of apache instance we can run
Date Fri, 11 Oct 2002 11:12:57 GMT
I think the Mr Grunnel was pulling your leg...

There is no arbitrary limit on the number of servers you can run. Each instance of apache
spawns numerous child processes (httpd daemons) which answer the requests - there is a hard
limit on the number of these which is defined at compile time to be 256. Obviously you can
set this higher if you recompile. The number of servers actually in use will vary with load
(controlled by the Max* directives).

However, you can start many instances of apache (each instance will spawn many servers). The
only restriction is that no two instances can listen to the same TCP/IP socket (i.e. they
must use a different IP address and/or port number).

The real limitation comes from your machine - if you have too many servers running, it will
run out of memory and have to swap and that will slow it down a lot. It also depends on load
- you can have dozens of idle servers with no problem, but if you get lots of CGI activity
even a few might slow the machine down.

So really, the simple answer is that there is no built-in limit. It jsut depends on how big
a computer you have. Maybe it is 6....
