If you're using htpasswd to set up your password file, then  you'll need 
to use .htaccess to read it.

AuthName "Protected Directory"
AuthUserFile /path/to/user/file
AuthGroupFile /path/to/group/file or /dev/null (if there is no group file)
AuthType Basic

require valid-user
