Don't know about your first problem but the second is:

<IfModule mod_dir.c>
    DirectoryIndex index.html
</IfModule>

This should be by default

Subject: [users@httpd] restart causes apache to fail

Hi, i'm new to the apache server, and have spent several hours learning
to
configure it. I had it up and running, serving .html to the 'net.
Then I tried to restart it from the tray icon option(I run Win2Kpro),
and got an error:"failed to restart".It won,t start from the monitor,
either.After trying to reboot my box, repairing the apache installation,
and
searching for 2 hours at apache.org, i'm lost. Has anyone had this
problem,
and knows a solution?

btw,do you know how to cause apache to NOT display the "index of...",
and just go to 'index.html'?
