Your problem is typical of a program running with a memory leak (i.e. the
process mallocs memory but doesn't free it after use). I guess the apache
developers knew that they couldn't control all the leaks in third-party
modules which users might load and so they provided this feature to give the
server daemon a finite lifetime after which it dies in an orderly fashion
and thus frees its resources.<<

php is pretty well known for it's mem leaks.
