There is a suexec module as well. So compile the module, add it to your 
configuration, and it should work. I.e.,

     LoadModule suexec_module      modules/mod_suexec.so

But why are you afraid to do a top-level configure, make, and make 
install again? It will not overwrite your logfiles or httpd.conf.
