You need some form of server-sided scripting to do this:

In CGI: This is available as a variable in the %ENV hash, i.e. $ENV{REMOTE_USER}
In Apache-ASP: $Request->ServerVariables("REMOTE_USER")

Maybe there is something similar in JavaScript if you want to do it client-side..
