I tried it with the slashes in it,but it did not work.  You can basically
call me a moron when it comes to this sort of thing.  Should these have been
in single/double quotes with slashes.

from the command line you can execute

/path/to/apache/root/bin/httpd -v

/path/to/apache/root/bin/httpd -? will give you a list of options to try.
