Thanx for your help :)

I even checked the content type as follows:

        $ telnet 127.0.0.1 http
        Trying 127.0.0.1...
        Connected to 127.0.0.1.
        Escape character is '^]'.
        HEAD /tmp/test.xml HTTP/1.0

        HTTP/1.1 200 OK
        Date: Thu, 11 Jul 2002 13:49:39 GMT
        Server: Apache/1.3.26 (Unix)
        Last-Modified: Thu, 11 Jul 2002 06:53:43 GMT
        ETag: "d26c-b326-3d2d2b77"
        Accept-Ranges: bytes
        Content-Length: 45862
        Connection: close
        Content-Type: text/xml

        Connection closed by foreign host.

The content of access_log:

...
127.0.0.1 - - [11/Jul/2002:15:49:52 +0200] "HEAD /tmp/test.xml HTTP/1.0" 200 0
127.0.0.1 - - [11/Jul/2002:15:50:59 +0200] "HEAD /tmp/test.xsl HTTP/1.0" 200 0
...

For apache it is clear we're talking about xsl/xml files. So if this is the
case, and error_log does not contain any useful information, to me it looks
like all is working fine. A riddle for me why I don't see anything on my
screen...
