I take it back.  What happened was I set "CC=cc" and reconfigured,
but it still used gcc.   When I fixed my PATH so gcc couldn't be
found, and it actually used cc to compile, it loads dynamic modules
just fine.  So chalk it up to some sort of gcc problem.
