When you say "default ErrorDocument", do you mean you get MSIE's "friendly" error message, or do you mean that you get Apache's default error document? MSIE substitutes it's own message when the error output is "too small", which essentially makes it impossible to send simple text error messages to MSIE clients. Bad Microsoft!
