Thanks Joshua for your answer but it does not solve the problem.

I've inverted the loading order of mod_alias and mod_vhost_alias but the 
problem persists.

I'm using Apache 1.3.20, I've enought problems with 1.3.20 to start with 
the problems involved in 2.0.x :-)
