I am not using a favicon.ico right now and I don't have a 404 error.
Should I use some headers or meta tags in the header of my web pages?

Yes. Just put a .ico file in your root doc directory, called
favicon.ico. The browser requests it, and you'll get 404 errors in your
log if you don't have one. IE and Mozilla both do this.
