There is a simpler solution.  List the following BEFORE your other
virtual hosts in httpd.conf:

<VirtualHost www.virtual.com>
ServerName dummy.catchall.host.la.la
<Location />
Order allow,deny
deny from all
</Location>
</VirtualHost>

But in reality, the argument to the <VirtualHost> directive should
be an IP address (or *), not a hostname.
