I am confused.  You say `echo $PATH` does not work!?!  

  Are you using GNU tools installed in /usr/local?  If so, I would set
the path by issuing the command
'PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/ccs/bin; export PATH'.

  Then run configure again and try to make it.
