Hosts file on win 2000 is
C:\windows (winnt)/systems32/drivers/hosts

You can get around dns by going to http://www.no-ip.com and getting a
free
host name from them.

You will need to create your own dns server and point all of your
computers
at the dns server for it to work.  I have it setup as
mychristiannetwork.lan at my home.
