Are you saying that my ISP should add the hostname subdomain.mydomain.com to
its DNS server?
(I use an ISP for the connection to the Internet, but host the Apache server
on my side)

Or should I install a DNS server on my side?

It makes absolutely no different to apache.  A hostname is a hostname is a
hostname.  Assuming you have the hostname properly mapped to an IP address
in DNS, you follow exactly the same technique as you did for a new domain.
