Well I never claimed that this is a big issue,.. it's rather just a cosmetic
issue to make things more perfect.

Indeed it's probably bizarre with the example ".pdf",... but just have a look
at /etc/mime.types and the extensions listed there... for some of them it's
definitely easily possible to have a plain ".<extension>" file.

Yes your example (<filesmatch .+\.(gif|png|jpg)$>) is what we IMHO suggest
people.

(or the non-PCRE alternative "*?.(gif|png|jpg)".

And IMHO that's not very much more complicated...

But again,.. this issue is just perfectionism,... and not a major thingy worth
to argue weeks ;)
