It seems we have users asking nicely - this crossed my path just a few
days ago, and again today.

The 2.2 patch ports pretty-much as-is to trunk.
I've committed it in r1034916.
Documentation TBD.

Feedback welcome from Deanna and anyone else with a use for this feature.
