Yikes.  Are there really other supported Unix's that don't have which?

Did you mean:

temp_create_method=file
if which mktemp >/dev/null 2>/dev/null; then
  temp_create_method=mktemp
elif which tempfile >/dev/null 2>/dev/null; then
  temp_create_method=tempfile
fi

If not, then I'm utterly confused.  -- justin
