see STATUS file. It's already voted for backport, just didn't make it yet...

The reason for the virtual flag is that it should be a user decision whether 
the httpd should generate the 404 (with errordocument and all) or not. IMHO 
the unconditional behaviour in 1.3 was a mistake (made in version 1.3.10). 
2.x was forked in 1.3.9 :-)
