gcc 3.3 on Mac OS X and gcc 3.4.0 (stock) on Solaris both refer to libgcc.a.

Well, not sure what we can do 'bout that.

It's better to try to figure this out than greatly obfuscate our code to 
work around a bug in one compiler.  So, I think our option is to try to 
figure what gcc-magic we need to call to get this right or just ignore it.

FWIW, I apply custom patches to the gcc specs file to work around this 
complete insanity.  -- justin
